After an unsettled week of not knowing who they were playing or where the actual game would be played, Grammar Carlton under 19’s went to College Rifles and played the best game of their season.
The final score of 23 – 10 was a good reflection of the game with both sides choosing to play running rugby but with Grammar Carlton having much more of the possession and nearly twice the territory advantage.
Line breaks favoured the GC team with full-back Sani Nuku having a tremendous game beating tacklers with relative ease. This lead to him scoring a great try as well as having a major hand in setting up the match winning try for winger Maleli Tawake. The first try was the result of a line break by half-back Johann Louw from inside his own half and finished 8 phases later with stand-out prop Ben Suisala charging over from the base of a ruck.
Captain Jacob Teleiai lead the team as he has all season, with a man-of-the- match effort. He was involved in everything and his ability to link with his forwards as well as the backs enabled GC to play the fast, expansive game that had got them to the final.
The championship win was a great reward for a team that has toiled away all year. Irish ‘imports’ – Darryl Marshall and Stephen Todd have been a real assist to the team as well as Japanese student Sho – me the money – Sameshima.
